The Phantom Of The Opera

The Phantom Of The Opera
By Andrew Lloyd Webber, Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart. Directed by Karen Francis. Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. Nov 15-17, 2013

The first of a trio of Phantom productions for Perth in the next year, Stray Cats Theatre Company's production has the advantage of not only being first, but having the most appropriate venue - the beautiful auditorium of ManPac being one of the best choices in the west for staging this large scale production.

This was for the most part a beautifully lavish production. Paul Spencer was a sympathetic Phantom, Jake Garner a melodic and handsome Raoul, but Cassie Skinner soared, singing exquisitely in a shining performance as Christine.

Supporting roles were well filled. Kristie Gray was a believable Carlotta with a gorgeous voice, while Joshua Mitting played Piangi with pomp. Miriam Fitze was delightful as Madame Giry while Jemma Armstrong was lovely as Meg. Warren Read and Andy Vernie brought humour to the roles of Andre and Firmin.

The set was impressive with beautiful statues and a lovely grand staircase. Director Karen Francis' staging was very well managed and the set well used. There were some gorgeous properties, especially the organ and monkey (both by Sean Bradley). The iconic chandelier was a little disappointing, lacking the delicate beauty expected of such an important prop.

The ensemble should have been strong, with some outstanding performers, many usually seen in leading roles, but the chorus lacked balance, being short of tenors and bases. They also tended to be under-directed, under-used and under-dressed.

Music otherwise was well managed by Music Director David Hicks, with the orchestra playing beautifully.

This was a production was well worth the trip down from Perth, and received standing ovations at many performances. Congratulations to all involved.
