The Pirates of Penzance

The Pirates of Penzance
By W. S. Gilbert and Sir A. Sullivan. Players Theatre, Ballina. Director: Jaime Sheehan. 14th June – 7th July, 2019

Once again, Ballina has presented an Essgee adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan at its best.

This production was full of the fun and hi-jinks one has come to associate with this type of show and the audience loved it.

With the leading lady battling a throat infection, the cast all rallied and the audience enjoyed the gallant performance.

The cast: Mabel – Mel Shoebridge, Frederic – Mick Webb, Pirate King – Peter Harding, Major-General – Graham Whittingham, Ruth - Lee Milward, Samuel – Daniel Pereira and Police Sergeant – Rod Ramsay worked well as a team under the Vocal Direction of Bev Peart-Kuter.

Multi-talented Director Jaime Sheehan, assisted by Iesha Williams, also choreographed the show and made the colourful costumes.

Amusing banter and interaction between the cast and Musical Director Warwick Binney was one of many highlights of the production.

It is encouraging to note all the “behind the scenes” support that Ballina is able to muster, which gives the future of theatre in this rural country town a great foundation for their continuing success.

Ballina – take a bow!
