Pure Blonde – Christie Whelan Browne

Pure Blonde – Christie Whelan Browne
Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Artspace. June 11 – 13, 2015

Award winning director Dean Bryant and musical maestro Mathew Frank have produced a show that pays homage to the blondes of musical theatre and what better performer to bring to life this cabaret than accomplished triple threat Christie Whelan Browne.

Rushing past a seated audience, we are introduced to Whelan Browne’s first character, WAAPA graduate Jess, who takes advantage of her 15 minutes of fame by showcasing her many talents, in the vain hope there may be a casting agent in the room. Hilariously neurotic, Jess highlights the competiveness of the industry and never misses a chance to have a dig at established stars on the way. Whelan Browne’s vocals flow from innocent newcomer, to egotistical leading men, to has-beens trying to keep up with an industry that is continually evolving.

Highlighting some of the less appealing aspects of show business was a fascinating concept, but some sketches were too long and although clever in their direction, I yearned for more of Whelan Browne’s dynamic voice.

Concluding with a heart-wrenching rendition of ‘There’s No Business Like Showbusiness’, performed by an aging performer to his last audience, was tender and did well to shine the spotlight on the diversity on display.

Although wildly entertaining, tightening of scenes would help this show to flow without losing impact and allow for songs to be heard in their entirety.
