Red Rabbit, White Rabbit

Red Rabbit, White Rabbit
By Nassim Soleimanpour. Perth Theatre Company Studio Underground, State Theatre Centre of WA. 2 - 12 Sep 2014

Red Rabbit, White Rabbit is a fascinating show written by Iranian theatre maker Nassim Soleimanpour. Featuring a different actor each evening, the performer is handed the script on stage at the beginning of the performance.

Opening night featured Sam Longley. A respected actor and renowned improviser, he was comfortable with the audience and delivered an excellent performance. His delivery was lovely, he does a brilliant cold read, and it was clear that he was as surprised as the audience with the plot twists.

Other performers at the State Theatre Centre will include Alicia Osyka, Hayley McElhinney, Kyle Morrison, Scott Ludlam, Alison Van Reeken, Sean Walsh, Monica Main, Kymba Cahill and Mark Storen. Red Rabbit, White Rabbit will also tour to some regional theatres.

It would be an interesting and different experience to see the show a second time, to see a different performer take up the challenge, and I am hoping to do that, but for first time viewers I recommend that you know as little as possible about the show. I will say that perhaps it is more an experience than a traditional play, that it will definitely make you think, but it is also really funny and really different.

Perth Theatre Company has made an inspired choice for its final production for 2014, and one well worth seeing.
