Rumour Has It: Sixty Minutes Inside Adele

Rumour Has It: Sixty Minutes Inside Adele
Cabaret by Adam Brunes & Naomi Price. The Little Red Company Production. Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts (Qld). 24-27 April 2013.

The insanely-talented Naomi Price has done it again. After turning in some brilliant performances in recent years in Jesus Christ Superstar, The Last Five Years and Rent, she upped the ante to a whole new level with her new show Rumour Has It: Sixty Minutes Inside Adele

Giving an explosive impersonation of the British songbird, and looking every inch her double with flowing red hair, padding, and swagger, she ripped through the Adele songbook as though she were born to sing it. “Rumour Has it”, “Someone Like You”, “Take It All” and “Rolling in the Deep” were all there, along with a heavy dose of the singer’s Academy Award Winner “Skyfall”.

Price peppered the act with a Spice Girls medley in the first half, a funny piss-take of Celine Dion (“My Heart Will Go On”), Taylor Swift (“I Knew You Were Trouble”), and Amy Winehouse (“Rehab”), in the second, and a megamix finale of Adele’s Greatest Hits which individually showcased the hot jazz and soul playing guys who accompanied her, and her back-up singers who included her The Last Five Years co-star Luke Kennedy.

The show was part vocal and part stand-up. Like all stand-up some gags landed and others didn’t, but when it came to the vocals Price was dynamite. At just over an hour, with an interval in the middle, it was a short show, and hopefully in time creators Adam Brunes and Price will increase the content, but for now it’s the next best thing to seeing Adele live.
