Sammy J and Randy’s Difficult First Album Tour

Sammy J and Randy’s Difficult First Album Tour
Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Athenaeum Theatre, 15 – 20 April, 2014

Sammy J and Randy the purple puppet’s latest show is ostensibly in support of their first CD album (though Mr J has released previous comedy CDS on his own), but the album itself is a live recording of their previous touring show, and this one has different material – so if you’ve bought the CD, rest assured you’re in for a fresh experience.

Sammy J exudes plenty of charm and boyish good nature in his performance, so much so that he’s somehow able to get away with occasional outrageously blue references without maligning his image. This is contrast to his comedy partner Randy, a puppet with a hilarious line in expletive-driven outspokenness, ably performed by the hidden Heath McIvor, who has created a fully dimensional personality for Sammy J to interact with. Much of the humour comes from recounting anecdotes of their time together – tall tales that grow in outrageousness as they build towards a comedy climax.

The spoken humour was punctuated by some very funny songs, with Sammy J on keyboards and occasional additional backing. The duo’s comic timing, and Sammy J’s sparkling, hi-energy stage presence – he really is a luminous performer – kept the audience enraptured throughout. It’s a terrific example of home-grown talent and a must-see show.
