The Doll Trilogy: Kid Stakes, Other Times, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll

By Ray Lawler. Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre, Melbourne. 10 February – 11 April 2026

Cane cutter mates Roo (Ben Prendergast) and Barney (John Leary) come down from Queensland in the off season – or ‘layoff’.  By chance, they run into a couple of girls – Olive (Ngaire Dawn Fair) and Nancy (Emily Goddard) – at the aquarium and end up as boarders and more at the Carlton boarding house run by Olive’s mother Emma (Caroline Lee).

Hans Christian Andersen Jr - A Musical Fable of Copenhagen

By Frank Loesser, Timothy Allen McDonald, and Daniel Murtzlufft. Directed by Carole Dhu. Pinjarra Civic Centre, WA. Feb 20 -21, 2026

The WA Premiere of Hans Christian Andersen Jr - A Musical Fable of Copenhagen brought a sense of deja vu for anyone familiar with the Danny Kaye, Hans Christian Andersen film, as it contains the same songs. While from memory, the tale is quite different, it has a lovely sense of nostalgia, and the young cast bring the story to life beautifully.

School of Rock

By Mike White, Julian Fellowes. Glen Slater and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Darlington Theatre Players. Directed by Devlin Turbin. Marloo Theatre, Greenmount, WA. Feb 20 - Mar 14, 2026

Between schools and community theatres, Perth theatre patrons have had a few opportunities in the last few years to see School of Rock. Despite this, Darlington Theatre Players’ incarnation feels fresh and fun.

Soweto Gospel Choir

Presented by Andrew Kay. Adelaide Fringe. The Peacock at Gluttony - Rymill Park. Feb 24 – Mar 2, 2026.

Soweto Gospel Choir capture the soul, joy and transcendent spirit that creates an unforgettable performance.

Dave Hughes

Adelaide Fringe 2026. The Garden of Unearthly Delights. February 23rd - March 8th, 2026

Clocking up 33 years in the Australian comedy scene, comedian Dave Hughes’s observations have become part of Australia’s zeitgeist. Loveable larrikin “Hughesy” has been a regular fixture on the comedy circuit, television and radio since he started his career at 22 in Perth, Australia.

Death of the Human Resource

By Sean Guy. Stirling Players. Directed by Jay Shaw. Stirling Theatre, Innaloo WA. Feb 12-21, 2026

Stirling Players’ first show for 2026 was a Sean Guy comedy that was well presented, expertly acted and well received. Sean Guy, a Darwin-based playwright, may well be Perth’s most popular playwright and is giving Will Shakespeare a bit of a challenge.

Taming of the Shrew

By William Shakespeare. Presented by Melbourne Shakespeare Company, directed by Emma Austin. Malvern Central Park, 148 Burke Rd, Malvern East. 27 February — 15 March 2026.

This Shakespearean comedy is often viewed as a problematic play because of the shades of misogyny that it exhibits in the treatment of the rebellious Katarina (Kian Pitman). In the story her resistance to adhering to norms of femininity that favour subservience and compliance, suggest that she requires taming by her money grabbing suitor Petruchio (JP Vizcay-Wilson).

Quand le Corps S’exprime: The Body’s Narrative

Chun Dance & Cluster Arts Global. Adelaide Fringe. The Garage International @ Dom Polski. Angus Street, Adelaide. Feb 26 – March 7, 2026

Quand le Corps S’exprime: The Body’s Narrative is pure poetry from start to finish. Beginning and ending in silence, it is a production without story, theme, or statement, it is pure dance.

With a bare stage except for a long strip of white fabric with black markings, draped vertically at the start of the production, the ensemble of three women and two men in flesh briefs and bodysuits begin the all too short forty-five minutes in slow motion. As the soundtrack joins them, they move in canon, in unison, in solo and in duos.

Waiting For Monarto: Sandi McMenamin

Adelaide Fringe. Ruby's at HST at Holden Street Theatres. Sat, 28 Feb - Sat, 14 Mar, 2026

I have a suspicion that Sandi McMenamin is so committed to music and singing, that if you call her, she will accompany you whilst you are singing in the shower! Born into a passionately music focused family who loved nothing more than a sing-along, she went on to 17 years classical training, and has been involved in musical theatre, song writing, rock bands/musicals, school music teaching, choir work and music arranging but notably as a solo act that made her one of Australia's most widely travelled entertainers.

Hissterier

By Amelia and Kailyn. The Blue Room and Fringe World. Feb 3-7, 2026

The Fringe World guide tells me that Hissterier asks "What does it mean to be classified as ‘crazy’?” This is a piece, that dabbles with craziness, is definitely not linear, and leaves more questions than it answers.
