See You Next Tuesday

See You Next Tuesday
By Sam Nerida. Static Drive. Directed by Alexa Taylor. The Blue Room Theatre, Perth, WA. June 18 - July 6, 2019

Static Drive’s See You Next Tuesday was originally developed as part of Barking Gecko and the Australian Theatre for Young People’s Fresh Ink writing development process. Billed as “Hormones, smart phones, and really big feelings”, it is a coming of age story featuring 17 year old Evie, as she comes to terms with her sense of self, her sexuality and her sense of responsibility. Writing with a huge amount of potential, it is well presented in this premiere at the Blue Room.

Evie, is simultaneously and cleverly played by Ramiah Alcantara, Caitlin McFeat and Tess Metcalf. The show’s hallmark is rapid-fire dialogue delivered in triplicate, that shows Evie’s rapid thought-process, as she makes decisions - both good and bad. Excellent team-work from all three actresses as they work to portray a single character and show the complexity that is every human - especially perhaps teenage girls.

See You Next Tuesday has very frank, very bold dialogue, and shows a young woman who owns her sexuality - something we rarely see. The premise is clever and really holds our interest, but could probably lose ten minutes or so (and some scene/costume changes) and be an even stronger show. A fascinating aspect of the three layered dialogue is that every audience member will miss whole chunks of “the show” because it is impossible to tune into three monologues at once, giving each audience a ‘choose your own adventure’ of sorts - it also means it might make interesting second or third viewing.

Bold new writing, and a talented cast, make this an interesting and different choice. Especially appealing to young women, its unusual style and its great vibe give it a broader appeal.
