Shrek The Musical Jnr

Shrek The Musical Jnr
Music by Jeanine Tesori, Book and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Directed by Olivia Collier. Hertha Reserve, Stirling WA. 21-30 Sep, 2018

Shrek Jnr is a big, high energy holiday treat presented in a big top in Stirling, with a large cast, great costumes and lots of fun. A highly immersive performance with opportunity to meet the characters and have photos, it is a great way to introduce little people to live theatre and a great school holiday outing for all.

There were lots of pre-schoolers having a ball at the opening matinee, including a little lass of 2 near me, who danced in the aisle throughout the second act, although I think Primary School aged children may enjoy the show even more. Like the movie of the same name, the musical works on many levels and caters for all ages - but the shorter run time of a Junior Production makes it easier for young people to sit through.

A huge cast bring fairytale characters to life. The title role is played with a charming accent and lovely presence by Jesse Watts. Shrek’s unconventional offsider, Donkey, is portrayed with scene stealing excellence by Presley Massara. The beautiful Princess Fiona is given a gorgeous voice and considerable sass by Lilyan Smith.

Max Hughes is definitely not short of talent as he brings the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad to life. The Dragon looks spectacular, and is given great voice by Elaina O’Connor.

Musical highlights include “I Know It’s Today” sung by a trio of Fionas (the child Fiona is played by Ava Sharp and the teen Fiona by Christie McGarrity) and "Welcome to Dulac”, sung by a delightfully attired ensemble.

Lots of exciting characters make brief appearances. Particularly memorable are Sahara Rowan’s Gingy, Amy McCann’s Puss in Boots, Clara Lee’s Pinocchio, Zac McCulloch’s Pied Piper, Thomas Denver’s Peter Pan and the Three Pigs (Nikita D’Souza, Jessica Green and Aimee Samut). The plot is kept moving by a trio of storytellers nicely brought to life by Leah Cusma, Caitlin Streatfield and Eliza Lewis.

Shrek the Musical Jnr is fun for all ages, and a rollicking good time is had by all. At the opening performance, plenty of good seats were still available, but I imagine that this will change as the word gets out.
