Side by Side by Sondheim

Side by Side by Sondheim
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (and music by Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers and Jule Styne). Playlovers. Directed by Gillian Binks. Limelight Theatre, Wanneroo, WA. July 26 - Aug 4, 2018

Currently homeless, Playlovers presented this musical entertainment at Wanneroo’s Limelight Theatre. This show is often performed quite formally, as director Gillian Binks describes, “in a long black dress by a piano”, and working in a borrowed venue, this would be the simpler approach. This production has a different feel, set in a bar, and feeling more like a conventional musical than a revue.

Gillian Binks’ set design features some very creative poster work, and brings a warmth and casual vibe to the production thanks to some solid set construction, and strong work from scenic artist Ursula Kotara and graphic designer Jen Edwards.

Opening with the warm and impressive vocal tones of Chris Garish, with the iconic song "Comedy Tonight", the relaxed and friendly tone, and high quality vocal work was set for the night. Other highlights include Rachel Monamy’s stunning and frantic "Getting Married Today" and her gorgeous rendition of ballad "Send In the Clowns". Rachel also had a story arc of sorts with David Wallace - whose performance was stunning throughout.

Memorable moments included Tania Morrow reprising her appearance as Dainty June, performing a delightful version of "If Mumma Was Married" with Bella Bourgault, and lovely whole company numbers (including some from the musical Company). Danielle Berg, though an experienced singer, made a welcome community theatre debut in this production, and the cast was rounded out with lovely performances from Genevieve Newman and Vanessa Vance.

First time Musical Director Shaun Davis, has taken the leap from musician to Musical Director with panache, also providing piano accompaniment.

While the singing was excellent and the songs well acted, some of the linking material could have been more polished, a minor quibble in an otherwise well crafted production that was a true tribute to Sondheim’s earlier work.

A great winter warmer of a show that deserved bigger audiences.
