Singin’ in the Rain

Singin’ in the Rain
Music and lyrics by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed. Script by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Babirra Music Theatre (Vic). Director: Alan Burrows. Musical Director: Amy Wert. Choreographer: Kristy Griffin. The Whitehorse Centre, Nunawading. June 1 – 16, 2018

Babirra Music Theatre was at its absolute best again. Though Singin’ in the Rain is not a great piece of theatre, with its two dimensional characters and melodramatic story line, it is a delightful romp and has some spectacular dance sequences.

It started with a film being shown during the overture, introducing the main characters, which was a nice touch.

The sets were impressive, with different scenes being flown in and out rapidly. Short film clips had to be shown at various stages and would quickly switch to backstage. Many depicted the attempts by the 1920s film company to introduce sound into their films, and were very funny. The lighting was very good, particularly the rain sequences.

Robbie Wilton did most of the heavy lifting as Don Lockwood, trying to keep his leading lady in the dark about his new love interest. A tall, good-looking lad, he sang well and was an excellent dancer. Abbey Hansson was his love interest, Kathy. She sang beautifully and the two had real chemistry.

Jeremy Russo was the comic side-kick, Cosmo, with a cheeky grin and wonderful comic timing. Emily Mignot was over-the-top as the leading lady, Lina, who did a great job of singing very badly. Other roles were all well taken andon several occasions the whole cast were tap-dancing, and dancing very well.

The orchestra played well and the sound was excellent. This was a very enjoyable night at the theatre.
