Vertigo 20

Vertigo 20
Vertigo Dance Company. OzAsia Festival. Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide. 30 Sep – 1 Oct, 2016

Our bodies have the ability to communicate emotion without saying a single word and that, teamed with inspiring choreography can be a very potent combination.  Vertigo Dance Company are based in Jerusalem and have been teaching and performing for 20 years. Their latest offering is a culmination of their works from the past two decades. Choreographer and co-founder Noa Wertheim takes us on a journey of self-discovery with stunning results.

Dancers engage the audience from their first entrance. The set is constructed to look like one large room; walls are a muted grey with multiple ledges adorning the enclosure. These platforms double for seats, allowing dancers to pause and reflect. Music by Ran Bagno is of a mystical quality and at no time dwarfs the movement on stage. Costume design by Rakefet Levy is understated with an achromatic feel. It is all about the movement and the dancers’ execution of the choreography. Lighting by Dani Fishof complements the already mystical mood.

Each composition is tied together beautifully. At times the synchronised movement is mesmerising. Choreography highlights the dancers’ incredible core strength allowing them to contort their bodies with precision. Movement echoes the push and pull that is life; it tells a story of change and evolution. With the dancers tilting, swaying and using each-other as anchors, we witness an almost spiritual awakening.

Although the surroundings are of a neutral quality, the choreography offers up partnerships of honesty and diversity. The performance is hypnotic, with many tender moments. The energy is relentless and highlights the dancers’ physicality. The performance is a medley of life itself and is nothing short of stunning.

It is easy to see why this company has earned many accolades.
