The Witches

The Witches
By Roald Dahl, adapted by David Wood. Barking Gecko. Directed by Lucas Jervies. Subiaco Arts Centre, Subiaco WA. Mar 30 - Apr 12, 2015

Barking Gecko's latest production (in conjunction with Griffin Theatre Company) is an excellent choice for school holiday entertainment, offering a high energy rendition of Roald Dahl's popular story.

Presented by a single actor - the fabulous Scott Sheridan, originally from Perth, The Witches is a 45 minute turbo paced experience that offers surprises at every turn.

Very simply staged, it makes use of the charm of the original text, a clever adaptation by David Wood, tight direction by Lucas Jervies and most prominently a stellar performance by Scott Sheridan.

Scott's energy is amazing and his seamless transitions between ten very distinct characters is outstanding. You are never in doubt as to which character is in focus and every character is believable and immediately identifiable.

Designer Hugh O'Connor makes magical moments in the almost bare space — and the sound design by Nate Edmondson is astutely atmospheric.

The opening night attendees were a little more mature that the intended audience, but were clearly entertained and entranced and the consistent giggling of the few little ones in the auditorium was proof that the target market will adore this show.

Storytelling at its very best - I highly recommend this one for the kids but also for young acting students for the wonderful adaptability of Scott Sheridan. Well worth seeing.
