Writer’s Block

Writer’s Block
Written and directed by Kellie Eatock. World Premiere. Javeenbah Theatre, Nerang, Gold Coast. January 29 – February 13, 2016

Writer’s Block tells of the struggle between Writer, Jane (Libby Bancroft) and her characters to create a story line where everyone is happy with the plot; not an easy situation when the characters are self opinionated and determined to get the outcomes that they believe are rightfully theirs.

Jane’s hero is Jake (based on her memory of a former boyfriend), fabulously portrayed by Sean Curran and heroine Adele - Cassidy Mackie (who is always making sure that her character doesn’t play “second fiddle” to the handsome, debonair object of Jane’s creativity).

Throughout the action there are intermittent interruptions being the result of the writer’s block or the dissatisfaction of either or both characters with the direction the story appears to be heading. This makes for some comedic situations.

The other two characters in the cast are an older gentleman Paul- Adam Hellier; who has taken an interest in Jane and subsequently becomes a character in the plot and Kate – Emily Scanlon (Jane’s temporary house guest/sister) who forever wants something to eat or something to do or both.

Writer’s Block was workshopped as a one act play several years ago and it was interesting to see its metamorphosis.

Kellie Eatock has written and directed a fun play with plenty of humour and gathered a wonderful cast to do it justice.
