Yada Yada Yada: A 90s Sitcom Special

Yada Yada Yada: A 90s Sitcom Special
By Lauren Edwards and Jude Perl. The Butterfly Club, Melbourne. 5 to 9 July 2017

One of the most entertaining new shows of 2017, Yada Yada Yada – A 90s Sitcom Special is every bit as enjoyable as it sounds. Nostalgic for some, perhaps retro for others, this show has the best, or worst, of 90s television jam packed into one hour of hilarity.

Besides two of your favourite 90s silver screen queens, the show features theme songs, quotes and trivia. Edwards and Perl achieve no mean feat by singing in tune while keeping up their characters’ accents.

Edwards’ impeccable impersonation of Fran Fine is uncanny. She has the voice and facials down pat! She admits to being a massive fan of Fran Drescher and other female comedians such as Lucille Ball. She was even a nanny herself with one of her past charges turning up for opening night.

Perl has made her mark on Melbourne’s performing arts scene in recent years, winning two Green Room Awards and performing in consecutive Melbourne International Comedy Festivals since 2015. Although she considers herself a musician and comedian rather than an actor, she is highly satisfying as Fran’s archetypal Jewish grandmother, Yetta.

Perl’s next show, Jude Perl: Let’s Hang Out, is due to open at The Butterfly Club on 18 July. Proving that it’s still one of the best venues to catch original works in Melbourne, Perl says she likes to try out new stuff at The Butterfly Club. The team are very supportive of new shows and ideas and it has a fun vibe, says Perl.

Edwards and Perl make a formidable team. Edwards came up with the concept and Perl wrote three original songs for Yada Yada Yada. They perform so seamlessly on stage it’s hard to believe this is the first time they’ve worked together. Possibly Australia’s next Gina Riley and Jane Turner (of Kath and Kim fame).

Producer Annie Bourke from Hot Mess Productions brought the two together for this show. She hopes to tour it on the festival circuit and bring it to the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. But if you’re in Melbourne, you can catch it right now at The Butterfly Club!
