Godspell

Godspell

The McDonald College (NSW).

Oh no! Not Godspell again!

Hasn’t every school done a production since it premiered in Sydney 40 years ago?

How to make it fresh for today’s audiences?

In The McDonald College presentation, the Musical Theatre Stream of Years 10 – 12, with some experience gaining exposure from the Years 7 – 9 group, Director / Choreographer Dolores Dunbar cleverly returned to the original, successful concept - simplicity.

The set was a structure of scaffolding strewn with the props the cast would use as needed and two sawhorses covered by three wooden planks which the cast would use to create tables, ramps etc.

The costumes were a collection of multi-coloured rag-tag outfits, which could have been plucked from a bargain bin.

Mostly however Godspell needs a young, energetic, triple threat cast and this production had it in spades.

All of the major players were given their chance to shine; and shine they did.

Mr. Peter Kraft, Director of Performing Arts at The College, was wearing his Musical Director’s hat and led a hot band.

The performance brought the audience to their feet, and after all, aren’t the audience the ultimate judges of success?
