Urinetown The Musical

Urinetown The Musical

Music and Lyrics by Mark Hollmann. Book and Lyrics by: Greg Kotis. Rosny College. Rosny College Theatre, Tasmania. Director: Darren Sangwell. 21 – 30 May 2015

Producing Urinetownthe Musicalmust have been a gift for director Darren Sangwell. College musicals provide an ever-renewable resource of talented performers of the same age cohort, with energy to burn and talent to spare. Teacher Sangwell had an enjoyable job shepherding this crew through a wonderful production.

The entire cast is composed of students - the show produced during one term, as part of their coursework. Professionals such as set designer Bill Dowd and choreographer Mallory Butters are engaged from outside to enhance the learning experience. The finished product is a credit to everyone involved, and had the feel of a professional show. The nuances of the satirical plot of Urinetownthe Musical were fully conveyed with in-your-face-take-that bravado. The performers were well rehearsed and confident, and no opportunities for laughs were lost, without any slowing of the pace.

The plot of Urinetown the Musical relates to a fictional problem, but it could happen. Due to a severe drought lasting twenty years, private toilets and public urination have become outlawed. For the poor, the only way to relieve themselves is at the public amenities. Most of the action is set around Public Amenity Number 9, a set cleverly designed by Bill Dowd to convert to the offices of Urine Good Company. UGC is by run by a corrupt official named Caldwell B.Cladwell, the villain of the piece, played maniacally by Joshua Scott. In a cast of almost forty performers, the ensemble effect was exploited, and everyone was important. Ayrton Rose, Chloe Honig, James Colbourn-Keogh and Elysse Barnes and Ella Wescombe were competent leads. Played for laughs and highlighting the satire, the cast struck the right note with the audience.

Despite its dark theme and menacing plotline, the songs are marvellous. Choreography by Mallory Butters ensured that the dancing was fast, sharp and energetic. Music from the nine piece band under the musical direction of Suze Ellis was superb. The apocalyptic theme was enhanced by striking outfits from the costume class under the direction of costume co-ordinator Nicole Ottrey.

A wonderful, funny, clever production! Well done Rosny College.
