THE FACTORY: NEW ZEALAND’S PACIFIC HIT MUSICAL TOURS AUSTRALIA

After becoming a hot ticket at the Auckland Arts Festival in 2013, New Zealand theatre company, Kila Kokonut Krew, are bringing their soulful musical about the Samoan migrant experience, The Factory, to Australia, premiering at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, with seasons at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta, Canberra Theatre Centre, Merrigong Theatre Wollongong and Gold Coast Arts Centre to follow during June and July.

The Factory explores a territory recognisable to many Australians, the search for love and a better life as an immigrant in a new country.

Inspired by true stories of Pacific Islander immigrants, The Factory tells the tale of a Samoan father and daughter who arrive in Auckland in search of ‘the land of milk and honey’. They are immediately set to work in a South Auckland textile factory, but each time the factory bell rings, they feels further away from both their home and aspirations.

Described as New Zealand’s very own ‘Pacific Les Miserables’, the uplifting, funk-fuelled musical comes to life with an original score featuring a exuberant and heartfelt songs, slick choreography and a live seven-piece band.

Written by Niuean-New Zealander Vela Manusaute (The Taro King), The Factory pays tribute to the Pacific people that worked the factory floor from the early days of migration in the 1970s, making the dream possible for their children and boosting the New Zealand economy.

This large-scale musical begins its Australian tour at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival (June 12 – 14), touring to Riverside Theatres, Parramatta (June 18-21), Canberra (June 24 & 25), Wollongong (July 9 – 12) and the Gold Coast  (July 15 & 16).
