New Rom Com for Sydney Stage

New Rom Com for Sydney Stage

For Malcolm Frawley, whose career has spanned theatre, film and television for almost 40 years, teaming up with up-and-coming producer Jordy Shea has been a reunion of all sorts.

The two originally met at Sydney Theatre School, where Malcolm has taught for the past seven years, and both have kept very up to date with each other’s careers. Frawley has extensive writing and directing credits, having spent the past decade writing and directing for the many acting schools which he has tutored at. His credits include writing for the television show Neighbours and being the co-director for NIDA’s screen acting program. Shea has been in theatre for the past four years, and has recently just caught the writing and producing bug which he credits almost fully to Malcolm.

‘He is one of Sydney’s most truthful playwrights,’ claims Jordy. ‘Despite him never having the elaborate success he definitely deserves, any students or actors who perform his plays come out singing his praises as both a writer and director.’

The collaboration lead them to dig up a play from Frawley’s past; Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful? Originally staged for Sydney Theatre School students, the play has been revamped for its new cast. The cast of 14 are already well underway in rehearsals, and Frawley is having a ball. This is exhilarating. It really is. So many bright, young talents,’ he remarked during one rehearsal.

Staged in the newly converted STS theatre, the cast features many graduates of the school and several non-graduates. It also marks the first time that Ferknerkle Productions has produced a show since 2007, and the first time it teams up with Jordy Shea Theatrical. Managing Director of Sydney Theatre School Mark Matthews has warmly welcomed the new production. ‘Sydney Theatre School is very pleased to be providing our new performance space for the production of Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful? All too often new plays such as this only have one season and then are never seen again. We are so excited for this piece to reach a wider audience’

The play follows Tegan and Silas who meet, fall in love and get engaged. The big day is tomorrow. What could possibly go wrong? It follows the mishaps and adventures of their lives as they go through their journey to the altar.
