GOLD COAST AREA THEATRE AWARDS 2012 - MASTER CLASS AND PRESENTATION NIGHT

What do you get when you combine a “Top Dog”, a “Naval Officer” and a “Tap-a-holic”?

Three Entertainment Luminaries who generously shared their experiences and “tips of the trade” with the cream of the Gold Coast Community Theatre Family.

Val Lehman, Ian Stenlake and Jack Webster were guests of the Gold Coast for a Master class and the Awards Presentation evening and a nicer and more approachable group of thespians would be hard to find.

Ian also compered the awards night (for the second year in a row) and both Val and Jack were guest presenters in the 4thAnnual Golden Palm Awards Night of glitz and glamour.

This year over 450 nominations were received in 32 categories from the 8 judges who saw 60 productions from 14 theatre companies and 7 schools.

Ballina Players won the coveted Platinum Palm Award for Outstanding Service to the Theatre Community and Spotlight Theatre received the Golden Palm for Hairspray as the most nominated production. Spotlight also took out the award for the Outstanding Community Theatre Production for Forever Plaid.

Other winners were Ethan Jones - Lead Actor in a Musical for Spring Awakening and Rachel Love won Lead Actress in a Musical for Nunsense. Lead Actor in a Play was Michael Lill in Doubt and Lead Actress in a Play was Natalie Stephenson for Proof: these four performers were from Javeenbah Theatre Nerang.

Support Actor – Musical: Michael Mandalios for Spring Awakening also from Javeenbah Theatre, Support Actress – Musical: Katrina Lardner All Shook Up, Spotlight Theatre Benowa. Support Actor – Play: Trevor Love The Odd Couple (Female Version) Javeenbah and Support Actress – Play: Joy Miller The Mousetrap, Ballina Players.

Director – Musical: Clem Halpin Blood Brothers, Spotlight and Director - Play:  Barry Gibson Proof: Javeenbah. Musical Director: Matt Dennett Forever Plaid, Spotlight and Best Vocal Director: Matt Pearson Hairspray, Spotlight. Choreographer: Paul Natividad Forever Plaid, Spotlight.

School/Youth Musical– Best Production:  Footoose, St Stephen’s College, Coomera.  Actor: Jonathon Wardwood Les Misérables, Hillcrest College, Reedy Creek. Actress: Tori Bailey Anne of Green Gables St Hilda’s School, Southport. Support Actor: David Whebell Les Misérable, Hillcrest College. Support Actress: Hannah Rigby Anne of Green Gables, St Hilda’s School.

The Lucky Grills Magic Moment of Theatre: Joint winners Devon Braithwaite Footoose, St Stephen’s College and Glendi Moore Nunsense, Javeenbah.

Set Design: Tracey and Luke Hutley. Costumes: Kate Tardy Bizarre, Spotlight. Lighting Design/Operation: Wayne Rudoph I’m Too Sexy for the 90s, Phoenix Ensemble, Beenleigh. Sound Design/Operation: Lance Solomon Les Misérables, Hillcrest College. Technical Achievement or Effect: Mark Shepherd Hairspray, Spotlight.

The Jock and Beverly McIlwain Special Encouragement Award: Elizabeth Buckley Anne of Green Gables, St Hilda’s School.
