The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Script: Rachel Sheinkin. Music and Lyrics: William Finn. Midnite Youth Theatre Company. Directed by Gregory Jones. Subiaco Arts Centre, Subiaco, WA. 15-18 March, 2017.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, as presented by Midnite Youth Theatre Company, is a feel good, rollicking good time.

Six competitors, and four audience members, compete to be the best speller in Putnam County. A lovely insight into some truly quirky middle school kids, who despite this being a ‘youth’ company are played by adults.

Hosted by Vice Principal Douglas Panch (played with depth by James McNeill) and former Bee Champion, the beautifully coiffured realtor, Rona Lisa Peretti (played with big hair, big voice and big heart by Kimberley Harris), there is much improvisation required, which is handled with ease. Peter Martis played the highly unlikely comfort counsellor with dedication.

Competitors were nicely cast. Shinae Cox brought charm and enthusiasm to lisping youngest competitor Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere, Madeline Crofts was highly focused as over-achiever Marcy Park and beautifully voiced Clare Martis was lovely as sweet, lonely Olive Ostrovsky.

Kieran Lynch grabbed attention as Chip Tolentino, who exits the competition in unusual circumstances, Philip Lynch was a formidable presence as magic-footed William Barfee and James Pinneri was delightful as the unusual Leaf Coneybear.

A strong production musically - both vocally and courtesy of the strong six piece band managed by musical director Jackson Griggs. Claire Nichols choreography was forceful and interesting and incorporated audience spellers nicely.

Stephanie Cullingford’s set was simple but appropriate, aided with strong lighting choices by Tess Reuvers. Sound was exceptionally strong, as designed by Lewis Spragg. Jay Waugh created a strongly character based costume collection.

Special mention to Opening Night’s guest spellers who bravely took to the stage, especially last man standing and audience favourite, Oliver.

Great fun with a dash of the unexpected, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a breath of fresh air and well worth a look.
