Anatomy of a Rom Com
Anatomy of a Rom Com is a lesbian love story (that at first threatens not to be) presented by the Lavender Collective, a group of sapphic storytellers and performers. Warm and funny, it features a talented and hard-working cast.
Leading the cast is the lovely Monroe Miles, as Jessica, a young doctor with a tragic dating history. As she poured out her heart to bar tender Drew (a warm and likable Paige Alexander). Drew concocts a plan to help Jessica win the heart of the Hot Doctor (an earnest performance by Aaron Hamilton - played with greying temples). A solid and enthusiastic supporting cast includes Claire Boon and Sarah Beth Aldridge as “Every queer person” observers Max and Alex, Katrina Esdale as best friend Rory, with director Elizabeth Hamilton completing the cast in a small but significant role.
Both the story and the performance felt a little undercooked on opening night, with the story feeling like it had a little too much foreshadowing and the show having a little too much empty stage time - there is also a makeover montage that feels slow and forced, despite providing a few smiles.
This is a company that is continuing to produce some really likeable theatre, and audiences will have a good time This is a show that is likely to ripen nicely during its short run at the Jonesway - and it returns for a second run at DADAA later in Fringe. Worth a look.
