The Boy From Oz

The Boy From Oz
By Nick Enright and Peter Allen. Spotlight Theatre Co. Gold Coast (Qld.). Director: Rhylee Nowell

The Boy From Oz is yet another hit for Spotlight Theatre Co.
Starring in the demanding role of Peter Allen, Matthew Hadgraft was hardly off stage and had the audience with him all the way. Lucy McIntosh’s Judy Garland and Tanele Storm Graham’s Liza Minnelli were both true representations of these great stars. Martina French’s portrayal of Peter’s mother, Marion, was well received by the audience and her rendition of Don’t Cry Out Loud was a highlight of the show. Great performances by the trio; Jess Papst, Louise Harris, Morgan Garrity, and Stephen Hirst playing the role of Greg Connell and Joel Murphy as the young Peter all added to the high standard of the show.
Director Rhylee Nowell and Musical Director Steven McKay have created a strong, true to life production, and together with Choreographers Kim Reynolds, Jess Papst and Rhylee Nowell, brought the colourful and entertaining tale of one of Australia’s favourite sons to life.
This show has many scene changes and the clever use of the white grand piano and multi- level set maintained the pace of the show, ably supported by the orchestra in the pit.
Under the guidance of Michael Sutton, lighting and sound were designed and operated by students of Gold Coast TAFE’s Certificate IV Live Production and Events.
