Eclipse

Eclipse
National Institute of Circus Arts. Conceptualised and devised by: Sally Richardson and Performers. Directors: Meredith Kitchen and Benjamin Sheen. 10-18th June, 2022

A strong opening with a post-apocalyptic theme began a joyous performance of well-honed skills. The performance space was defined by a patchwork tent and circular mat. As the tent was lifted a short “outsider” narrative was played out on the Chinese pole with daring moments performed with cheeky assurance. Costumes added to the narrative of changes in the world with suggestions of burdens and excess.

Other circus skills were integrated into the performance including hand balancing, low wires, foot and hand juggling, aerial ropes, high rings, group acrobatics, hula and aerial hoops, cyr wheel, displays of strength and group balancing. All of these particular skills were supported by well planned and executed movement and splendid group focus. This contributed to an integrated performance rather than a showcase of individual skills.

Equipment changes were well managed and the efficiency of the various re-settings of the stage added to the overall performance.

A soundscape was provided by recorded sound and a vocalist (Sally Richardson) who also provided some of the important impetus to narrative developments in the show.

The moment when a phone was put in a garbage bin drew a strong reaction from the audience and moved the narrative into wonder and joyous group movement.

Lighting seamlessly focussed attention and created the performance space.

This performance, including the strong presentation of circus skills delivered an enjoyable, thought-provoking show.
