Harp on the Willow by John Misto

Harp on the Willow by John Misto
Wyong Drama Group. August 12 – 21.

Wyong Drama Group continues to provide its local community with entertaining theatrical offerings. Their latest outing, Harp on the Willow, is a refreshing, uplifting, well-rendered production.

This marvellous play by John Misto is based on events in the life of internationally celebrated Irish singer/harpist Mary O’Hara who, at the height of her fame in 1962, withdrew to a contemplative order of nuns. The focus here is on those “missing years” as she releases herself from her personal demons and reappears to claim her former popularity. The dramatic action is interfused with charming musical interludes and interesting graphic presentations.

Director Ron Baker’s enthusiasm for the material has infused every aspect of production. The atmosphere created balances between absorbingly earnest and truly light-hearted. From a backdrop of grief and personal trauma, there arises a spirit of human transformation which is universally meaningful.

Rose Cooper carries the pivotal role of Mary with controlled aplomb. Her truthful rendition allows us to be drawn into her character’s emotional journey. Veteran actor Julie Bailey is wonderfully believable as the supportive reverend mother and newcomer Brad Talbot handles the demanding role of Tyrone with great strength and meaning. Flash-backs to Mary’s younger years are poignantly brought to life by Rohan Smith and Tamara Abbott. Interspersed moments of younger and older Mary singing and playing harp are highlights of the production.

With such a structurally complicated and stylistically varied play, perhaps a less literal set may have allowed a smoother transition between scenes. Yet WDG must be congratulated not only for the excellence of this production, but for their ongoing inclusion in their program of good Australian plays.
