Jazz Garters III

Jazz Garters III
Canberra Repertory (ACT). Director: Jim McMullen. Theatre 3, Action, 24 June to 9 July, 2011

If there's one predictable constant in Rep's variety shows that has carried over from Music Hall into Jazz Garters, it's the surprise factor.

But other things remain unblemished too.  Rep has reached a pinnacle of tight coordination in Jazz Garters III.  Even the diction in large vocal numbers was in general clear; quite an achievement when they're also dancing.  As ever with Lisa Buckley's choreography, the dancing was superb and tight.  A standout in this regard was a tap-dancing trio comprising Cameron Boxall, Miranda Cookman, and Peter Karmel.

That fine coordination extended even to the very interesting lighting of a set that Andrew Kay's and Russell Brown's genius outdid itself to create: the set is showtime elegance itself.  And the finely tuned multitalented eight-piece backing band, under the combined musical direction of Jim McMullen and young talent Nick Griffin, gave tight appropriate backing throughout that provided much of the emotional texture.

From a beautifully staged number we'll all remember from a certain film about a lion's regal inheritance to a ping-pong match beyond belief, from quick skits to beautifully crafted stage magic, the unselfconscious talent here is ripe for the picking.  Pure joy, and very, very funny.
