Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar
By William Shakespeare. Directed by Andre Victor. Roleystone Theatre, Brockton Hwy, Roleystone, WA. Sep 5 - 13, 2025

In the midst of a Shakespeare trend in Perth, with concurrent productions of The Tempest, and the Scottish Play, came Roleystone’s overtly political tragedy, Julius Caesar.

With a an overtly theatrical and Romanesque set design from Gary Wetherilt, the production’s costumes suggest a nowhere time, with Senators' costumes vaguely suggesting Roman togas, blending with modern suits and outfits that might have been pulled from the costume racks for Oliver (coordinated by Sarah Boyle). Lighting was strong and dramatic, adding impact - designed by Shelly Miller.

Paul Treasure ticked off a bucket list role, bringing depth and gravitas to the role of Julius Caesar. For long term Roleystone patrons seeing Paul stabbed in the back by frequent stage companion, and real-life long term friend Peter ‘Pear’ Carr, added extra impact, with Pear producing a fine performance.

Strong performances included Grace Edwards’ layered Caius Cassius and Caitlyn Boyle’s well-portrayed Casca. Patrick Danes was a thoughtful Marc Anthony, while Kieran Ridgway doubled Decius and Lucilius impressively.

Special mention to those playing the female characters, Nicquelle Rhodes as Calpurnia and Tiandra Seal as Portia, both creating strong and empowered women, within the constraints of the time.

With a cast of seventeen, it is difficult to mention everyone, but this production showed strong ensemble unity and teamwork.

Not perfect, the first part of the second half struggled to maintain momentum, and perhaps needed an energy boost, before regaining its strength after the appearance of Caesar’s ghost.

Nice to see a rarely performed Shakespeare, and some strong performances.
