Reuben Kaye: Apocalipstik

Reuben Kaye: Apocalipstik
Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Merlyn Theatre, The Malthouse, 113 Sturt St, Southbank Victoria. 28 March – 21 April 2024.

Apocalipstik may be inspired by the pessimism of a nihilistic view of the current condition of the world but there is absolutely no sense of resignation in this show. There is only fiery and emphatic rebellion and refusal to acquiesce to any notions of normal or the inevitable. The show is a phenomenal extravaganza of a range of Kaye’s many talents. Kaye is first and foremost an exceptional and skillful raconteur. This is demonstrated via the ability to tell the complex tale of the very colourful life of his Uncle Helmut. This also provides a window into Kaye’s own personal family history. Parody and irony abound as the story is threaded through the trademark songs and banter of Kaye’s oeuvre. Kaye is backed by his fabulous band, The Close Contacts, and combined with the stunning staging, costuming, and lighting the effect of the show is absolutely dazzling.

As an unapologetic drag performer (whose vanity is an integral part of his comedy) Kaye deliberately courts controversy and this is delivered in a titillating and impish manner. Kaye’s satirical humour is especially designed to give space to more marginalised voices, particularly those who identify as queer. The boundaries of decorum are constantly put to the test and the audience is continually prompted to perceive the world from his very brash and outlandish perspective. The experience is not unlike a very wild roller coaster ride, with rapid fire lyrics belted out at an incredible pace or dramatic pauses in the tales that convey expressions such as chilling disdain or quizzical mocking. The full throttle energy in Kaye’s performance is always astonishing and generates a level of exhilaration that is sensual, striking, and spectacular.

Apocalipstik is a truly sensational show, full of zest, fervour, and passion that will leave you with an unmistakable afterglow of sheer pleasure.
