A ‘sure-fire flop’ for JYM?

A ‘sure-fire flop’ for JYM?

Has producing hit musicals like Avenue Q, Spelling Bee, The Witches of Eastwick, Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors, Sweet Charity, Fame! and Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat for over a decade become a bit of yawn for JYM theatre company? This time, they have set themselves the challenge of producing Mel Brooks’ musical about an enormous, hilarious, stage disaster.

Based on the classic Mel Brooks movie, The Producers is the story of a has-been Broadway producer and a young naïve accountant who stumbles upon the notion that more money can be made from backing a sure-fire flop than trying to produce a success. With this, the two embark on a whirlwind tour of the crazy world of showbiz; finding the worst script, schmoozing the worst director and romancing scores of Little Old Ladies to ‘invest’ in the worst show ever made. They plan to bank the investments and abscond to Brazil as soon as the play folds, but their plans unravel as the worst show of all time goes horribly right!

This production will be the 5th JYM show directed by Brendan Cohen. On what keeps him returning to JYM, Brendan explains:

“Melbourne boasts a number of very professional amateur theatre groups. JYM is relatively new on the scene, started about 11 years ago by Shlom Eshel. The company is based in Melbourne’s strong Jewish Community, but is entirely inclusive, welcoming support and involvement from right across the Melbourne community. The company has set high standards of professionalism and builds a wonderful family feeling among its cast and production team. I love being a part of that.”

JYM theatre co. is Australia's only Jewish musical theatre company. JYM is committed to providing an outlet for aspiring actors, singers, dancers and crew members, offering a broad range of on-stage and behind-the-scenes opportunities.
