Antiques Decorate Gaslight in Style

Patrick Hamilton’s chilling Victorian psychological thriller Gaslight is the final production for 2013 for the Centenary Theatre Group (Queensland), opening on 2 November.

This classic thriller, set in Victorian London, was first produced in 1938 and later filmed twice, in Britain and in the USA. Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar for her portrayal of Bella Manningham in the latter version.

Jack Manningham is slowly, deliberately, driving his wife, Bella, insane. He has almost succeeded when help arrives in the form of a former detective, Rough, who believes Manningham to be a thief and murderer. Aided by Bella, Rough proves Manningham's true identity and finally Bella achieves a few moments of sweet revenge for the suffering inflicted on her.

"The set has been beautifully dressed and furnished, and we’d happily live there," Margaret Bell from Centenary Theatre Group told Stage Whispers. Director Kurt A. Lerps is feeling particularly at home at the theatre, mainly because half of the antique furniture from his house is now gracing the stage of the CTG.

"The things we do for theatre," Margaret added. "Sue Watson designed the set, and with the assistance of Rhyll Bucknell and John Biddle, it’s dressed and ready to go."

The cast features Meg Hinselwood as Bella Manningham, Erik de Wit and Jack Manningham, Catherine Bull as Elizabeth the housemaid, Brian Hinselwood as Inspector Rough and Simone-Maree Dixon as Nancy.
