Avenue Q, Canterbury

Avenue Q, Canterbury

Canterbury Theatre Guild (CTG) presents the Tony® Award-winning Best Musical Avenue Q at Bexley RSL from May 20- 29, 2016.

Winner of the TONY® “TRIPLE CROWN” for BEST MUSICAL, BEST SCORE and BEST BOOK, Avenue Q is part flesh, part felt and packed with heart; a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy the Slut (need we say more?), and other colourful types who help Princeton finally discover his purpose in life!

Life may suck on Avenue Q but being jobless, homeless, politically incorrect, having sex (whether hetero, homo or porno…and that’s just the puppets) are just some of the topics featured in the terrific songs of this show. For those weaned on Sesame Street, the Avenue Q puppets may look familiar, but with musical numbers like "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" and "If You Were Gay," this send-up of political correctness isn't for the kiddies.

Avenue Q, written by Jeff Whitty, with music by Robert Lopez and lyrics by Jeff Marx, first debuted in 2002 with an off-Broadway run. The show went on to beat favourite Wicked to win three of the top Tony Awards in 2004: Best Musical, Best Original Score of a Musical and Best Book of a Musical. It remains one of Broadway's hottest tickets and most original shows in recent memory.

This is a puppet show. However, this is not your kids’ puppet show as it sneaks a peek at the more raucos and sexual side of adulthood. “Avenue Q speaks to adult audiences on love, maturing, living life in the real world, and social issues in a hilarious way,” says Director and Choreographer Ste Casimiro.”

The cast includes Stefan Jamal (Princeton), Rodney Dean (Brian), Jessica James- Moody (Kate Monster), Brad Gavin (Nicky), Michael Hemming (Rod), Sharonne Lipman (Christmas Eve), Laura Nalty (Gary Coleman), Katherine De Figueiredo and Grace Lizzo(Bad Idea Girls), Peter Adam and Sam Creek (Bad Idea Boys), John Edge and Edward Mafi (Trekkie Monster), Bridget Keating-McIntosh (Lucy the Slut).

The urban fairy-tale features a Tony® Award-winning score with songs like "The Internet is for Porn", "There’s A Fine Fine Line" and "My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada".

WARNING: FULL PUPPET NUDITY AND OTHER VULGARITIES WILL INDUCE LAUGHTER.
