Comedy Behind Legendary Hollywood Line

Comedy Behind Legendary Hollywood Line

Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn!’

It’s arguably the most famous line in Hollywood history. But how it came to be spoken by Clark Gable’s raffish Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind is one of Hollywood’s best kept secrets. That is, if you believe Moonlight and Magnolias, the next play to open at the Pavilion Theatre, Castle Hill (NSW) from August 2.

It’s 1939 and the winds of war are rising in Europe – but the only wind legendary producer David O. Selznick cares about is the one blowing through his empty sound stages. He’s stopped production on ‘Gone With the Wind’ until he gets a script he’s happy with. And that’s why he locks himself, screenwriter Ben Hecht and director Victor Fleming in his office for five days. Their mission? Produce a fabulous screenplay so Selznick can make the movie he’s always dreamed of making and lay the ghost of his father’s failures to rest.

‘Hands down, this is the funniest play I’ve worked on,’ says director Karen Miller. ‘It’s a wonderful mix of screwball comedy, character moments and sly commentary on the creative process, with a touch of thoughtful social observation thrown in. We’re having the best time bringing it to life.’

Moonlight and Magnolias opens at the Pavilion Theatre on Friday, August 2nd, and runs until Saturday August 24th. Performances are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 8.15 pm, Sunday 4.30 pm. Tickets are $26.00, $21.00 concession, and are available from the Box Office 9634 2929, or online at www.paviliontheatre.org.au. The Pavilion Theatre is located on Castle Hill Showground, Doran Drive, Castle Hill.
