Disney Classic Flies Onto Chatswood Stage

It’s one of the most spectacular musicals of all time, and from October 15, Sydney audience’s will once again get to witness the supercalifragilistic Disney classic musical Mary Poppins, when Willoughby Theatre Company’s production opens at The Concourse in Chatswood.

This production is directed and choreographed by Declan Moore, whose recent turns with the company (The Phantom of the Opera and Evita) led to sold out seasons.

“While the show is a familiar one to audiences both young and old, we’ve added our own unique touches to keep the Poppins story fresh and exciting for those revisiting this classic musical,” said Declan Moore.

“Mary and Bert are set to fly above the Concourse stage and we have a full company of over 50 who’ll impress as they step in time as chimney sweeps and also deliver the spelling-challenged supercalifragiclistic number that we know will have our audiences singing along to.

“But while this show is big on spectacle it also has it’s intimate and tender moments as we follow the journey of the Banks family. Our cast has embraced these familiar moments that have been immortalised on both stage and screen and truly made them their own in a ‘practically perfect’ way,” added Declan.

Joining Declan on the production team is Co-Choregrapher Janina Hamerlok (Catch Me If You Can) and Musical Director Andrew Bartle. Assuming the demanding title role is soprano Michaela Leisk.

“This is a dream role to play and this company has been wonderful to rehearse with,” said Michaela.

“Each rehearsal I’ve uncovered a new layer to this wonderful character and I cannot wait to be flying high above the stage each performance. It truly is a timeless tale and one we can still take many lessons from,” added Michaela.

Rounding out the principal cast is Matt Hourigan as Bert, Brad Clarke and Nina Marsh as George and Winifred Banks, Sarah Morrisby (Bird Woman), Karen Oliver (Miss Andrew), Tisha Keleman (Mrs Corry), Donna Fitzgerald (Mrs Brill) and Kris Fenessy (Robertson Aye).

The show is set to be another box office success for the company on Sydney’s North Shore with some shows already sold out and due to demand an additional matinee preview was added to the season on Saturday October 15th at 1.30pm.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with demand for tickets for this show,” said Tom Sweeney, Willoughby Theatre Company President.

“With so many talented local performers and a cast of our future stars in our children’s ensemble, our audiences are in for a high-flying treat,” concluded Tom.
