Euröbeat: Ready to Vote?

Euröbeat: Ready to Vote?

Okay, admit it. You tell everyone that you would never watch the Eurovision song contest in a fit, but secretly you hold a party for your friends and they all come dressed as a different country in national costumes! Every year, millions of people sit around the television set (well, not just one set!) and argue about which overblown song is best/worst. Finally, it’s time we all came out of the Kitsch Kloset and admitted we’re hooked. And the most fun to be had from such a confession is to buy tickets to the amazing Fab Nobs production of Euröbeat – Almöst Eurövisiön, which opens on March 8th, 2013.

It’s no secret that I am a fan of this company, but I’m also a fan of this show. It has the same feel as other small musicals that we create so well in this country; like Keating – The Musical; or Margaret Fulton: Queen of the Desserts, or Tracy Harvey’s new offering Prick – the musical. We’ve managed to create a whole new musical genre which works equally in an intimate theatre setting or a cabaret/theatre restaurant. Creators and co-writers Craig Christie and Andrew Patterson have given us the perfect entertainment, sending up a sacred cow we can all enjoy even if we don’t get clear reception on SBS.

Fab Nobs Theatre Inc’s factory at Bayswater (Victoria) is the perfect setting, since it has the best of both worlds. It’s an intimate theatre capable of presenting full length two act musicals; but it also has cabaret type seating and a terrific little bar – so you can add to your enjoyment with a glass of something and a platter of cheese and crackers.

And in the second act you get to vote for your favourite country…so there is a different winner every night. I would be the first to admit that far from being serious musical theatre….like the company’s wonderful production of Next to Normal in 2012…Euröbeat  is a high camp hoot with kitsch costumes and daggy hosts….a joyous celebration of mediocrity with spangles.  It’s also hysterically, belly-achingly funny – just what we need to take the bitter taste off the coming election, unemployment and the carbon tax.

There are NO weak links in the FABNOBS team in any production – and this promises to be no exception. Stalwarts Tony (Bones) Burge and Ang Cuy are joined by favourites Sarah Somers, Robbie Medica and a talented cast - with direction and choreography by Patt Ryan and the tremendously talented Vicki Quinn as Musical Director and vocal coach.  The season is short….Friday 8th March to Sat 23rd March. But there’s a special price deal called Cheap Monday on…you’ve guessed it….Monday 11th March. Perhaps I’ll see you there. I’m guessing I will need to go more than once just for the sheer joy of it.
