Halloween Comes Early to Strathfield

Halloween Comes Early to Strathfield

Strathfield Musical Society are looking forward to presenting The Addams Family musical in October 2016, a comedy based upon the characters created for the original single-panel cartoons about a ghoulish American family with a liking for all things macabre. Most people would identify with the long running TV series and fans of the show will be able to see many of their favourite characters brought to life on the stage.  It’s just the thing to get you in the right mood for Halloween.

Wednesday Addams (Stephanie Eid) has fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. She tells her father about him but begs him not to tell her mother. Now Gomez Addams (Clinton Griffiths) must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife Morticia (Elizabeth Lowrencev).  Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s boyfriend and his ‘normal’ family.

Also featuring are Jack Fahd as Pugsley, James Musumeci as Fester and Marlon Lowrencev as Lurch.  Grandma is played by Katherine De Figueiredo, Mal by Keith Ramsay, Alice by Christine Forbes and Lucas by David Berry

The show is being directed by Cathy Boyle, who has teamed with Natalya Aynsley as Musical Director and Melissa Stewart as Choreographer.

A first for the Society will be the use of projected backdrops, or scenic projections.

Scenic projections are no doubt going to be used more and more in theatres, as they offer a fantastic opportunity to use moving images and draw the audience into the show in a way that static backdrops can't compete with.   With technology becoming ever more advanced, they are becoming more available to every Society and provide a way to lift any production out of the ordinary.

As the Addams Family theme would suggest, the backdrop designs for this production are spooky and full of kooky details, from Spider webs adorning ceilings of a mansion where cracked plaster exposes old wood.   The transitions are very striking, and are going to take the audience into the dark and mysterious world of the Addams Family on a journey they won't forget!!

Projections also provide a society with a unique opportunity to display a wide variety of backdrops without the usual restrictions on how many beams are available to hang them, and don’t rely on stage crew to deploy them during scene changes.

They're not without some technical challenges - for example, the backdrops need to be projected from very close to the screen or cyclorama in order to avoid the cast being illuminated by the projection, which can require a special lens and projector combination.

Consideration also needs to be given as to how to spotlight characters without washing out the projection.

They certainly provide a way to simplify set design, while offering the ability to add a dynamic element for cast to interact with that hasn't been available before.
