Little Mermaid for Engadine

Little Mermaid for Engadine

Children in the past few years have been thrilled by The Little Mermaid movie, they have attended Little Mermaid birthday Parties, and gone to sleep clutching their Ariel Dolls. Now Engadine Musical Society is giving kids of all ages the opportunity to see the Disney Junior version of The Little Mermaid live on stage at the Sutherland School of Arts during August.

With a cast of 40+ children all aged 18 or under, this production promises to literally bring to life the very popular story of Ariel (played by Heather Cheney), the youngest of 7 daughters of King Triton (Cian Ryan).  When she meets Prince Eric (Ethan Harvey) her desire to be human is so great that she makes a bargain with Ursula, the sea witch (Jacinta O’Connell) to trade her exquisite voice for the chance to be human.

Based on the Danish fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid is a delightful underwater story featuring a myriad of cute and cheeky sea creatures including crabs, seagulls, turtles, eels, fish, water birds and frogs. Director Rod Herbert plans a bright, colourful show, full of animation and laughter.

Engadine plans a production which holds true to the Disney movie, with the characters captured by way of detailed costuming and the use of puppets, imported from the USA.  Lighting plays a large part in recreating the underwater scenery, which promises to transport children into the world of Ariel, her friends and her family.

There are lots of musical and dance numbers with songs such as ‘Part of Your World’, ‘Kiss the Girl’, and ‘Under the Sea’, which won an Academy Award in 1990 for best song.

This popular musical runs from the 15th to the 24th of August 2014.  Show times are 7.30 pm both Friday nights and 11am and 3 pm Saturday and Sunday both weekends.  Running time is around an hour and a half including interval, so it is suitable for younger children.  All tickets are $25 and bookings are essential.
