Perth Pajama Game

Perth Pajama Game

Broadway musical The Pajama Game, based on the novel 7½ cents by Richard Bissell and George Abbot and featuring a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, is the September production for Stirling Players (WA).

The Tony Award-winning 1954 Broadway hit deals with labour troubles in the Sleeptite Pajama Factory, where worker demands for a seven-and-a-half cents raise go unheeded.  In the midst of this ordeal, love blossoms between Babe, the grievance committee head, and Sid, the new superintendent.

Doris Day starred in a 1957 film version, along with John Raitt, Carol Haney, Reta Shaw and Eddie Foy Jnr. Popular numbers from the show include Hey There, Steam Heat, Hernando’s Hideaway and Once-A-Year-Day.

The Pajama Game is director Lisa Johnson’s first production with Stirling Players. A secondary drama and English teacher, she has been involved in various productions in a variety of roles across Perth:  singing, acting and dancing in MPAC’s 2007 musical production of The Wizard of Oz and in 2009, Shout: The legend of the Wild One; acting in The Venetian Twins, 2008, and Away, 2010, both for Old Mill Theatre, and Spurboard: in 2012 for Stage Door.

In 2010, Lisa directed her first musical, The Sound of Music. She has also directed Antigone and Coronado for Mood Theatre, both in 2011. In late 2011, Lisa undertook a training course at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in direction. Since returning from RADA, Lisa has directed Hoods and The Lesson, also for Mood Theatre.
