The Phantom of the Concourse

The Phantom of the Concourse

Five Minutes with Simon Greer, Willoughby Theatre Company’s Phantom of the Opera

What does playing the role of 'The Phantom' mean to you?

I have been fascinated by the show ever since I first learnt of it in primary school. It is a pretty iconic role for a musical theatre actor to play and I am so lucky to be able to have a crack at such an interesting character.

What is the biggest highlight of playing this role?

The biggest highlight to playing this role is that it is challenging for me as an actor/singer. Vocally, I have found it tough going as I am using my full range and some of it is deceivingly difficult in the timing department too. Even though the character does not actually have a huge amount of onstage time (compared to Christine and Raoul), what the Phantom does have to do is pretty intense. I am relishing this chance to get my teeth stuck into such a good acting role.

With only a few weeks until the curtain rises, how are you feeling?

Pretty nervous! I am really feeling the pressure on this one. It is such an iconic role and I think it comes with a lot or preconceptions about how ‘The Phantom’ should be played. He is such a conflicted man. Strong, intelligent, a genius - but at the same time, physically and mentally scarred - almost emotionally childlike at times.

What is something quirky about Simon Greer that we wouldn't know (that might help you get into character)?

I built a puppet theatre version of The Phantom of the Opera in my parents’ garage when I was 11. I just about wore out the old cassette tape practicing the chandelier drop. The chandelier never survived its fall (luckily it was made of Lego, so a quick reconstruction between drops could be made). Luckily, our chandelier at Willoughby is a little more robust!

What can audiences look forward to when they book their tickets to Willoughby Theatre Company's The Phantom of the Opera?

Audiences are in for a real treat. They will get a beautifully romantic story, a 26 piece orchestra and excellent production values. The highlight will be the wonderful principal and ensemble cast which, I think, are the most vocally strong I have had the opportunity to share a stage with.

To see Simon Greer in The Phantom of the Opera, opening Wednesday May 14 at The Concourse Theatre, Chatswood, call 1300 795 012 to book your tickets.
