Shlock Rock Horror Musical: Little Shop at PLOS

Shlock Rock Horror Musical: Little Shop at PLOS

PLOS Musical Productions presents comedy horror rock musical Little Shop of Horrors at Frankston Arts Centre (Vic) from Friday July 19.

What is Little Shop of Horrors?

It's the story of a plant from outerspace that is fed human blood so it grows to take over the world - basically! Throw in a crazy evil dentist, a clumsy florist apprentice, a manic florist shop owner, a blonde bombshell with a black eye, a trio of urchins with amazing voices along with two puppeteers and a plant with a voice which we’re promised will will ‘blow you away’ - and u have little shop!

“It's a fun show and we are really playing up the shlock horror’ feel of it,” says director Danny Ginsberg. “Hence some of the fun pics and videos on our facebook page and website.”

Down-and-out skid row floral assistant Seymour becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore which offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!

Not only is local theatre stalwart Michael Fletcher the set-builder, he is also resident photographer, and one of the lead characters in the show.

“Many people have said how amazing the sets are for this show and it's thanks to Mike's amazing creativity and design,” director Ginsberg adds.

“The unique and huge scale set is something to behold. Its design is to focus the audience on the strange happenings (and by strange we mean man eating plant from outer space) in Mushnik's Skidrow Florist Shop.
“The design, in nothing but grey tones, plays homage to the original 1960, black and white, shlock horror movie, which the musical is based on. This 1960 movie also had a cameo from a very young Jack Nicholson. Colour and other designs features start to emerge as the characters are introduced to the man-eating plant Audrey II.

“We are also using state of the art lighting and digital projection to add more dimension to this already amazing set. What a great way to pay homage to the shlock horror movie than by producing this musical live on stage - after all live theatre is the original 3D!!!”
