Songs for a New World at Javeenbah

Javeenbah Theatre Company (Qld) present a piece of musical theatre critically described as “dizzily, unabashedly confident” and “illuminated by character and wit”. Songs for a New World presents four performers sharing multiple tales of people at their very own crossroads. As composer Jason Robert Brown explains, “It's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back."

Director Trevor Love knew he had found his next project as soon as he heard the score. “Brown is, in my mind, a modern Sondheim. He writes beautiful music with intricate harmonies and part work, which makes this show a great challenge for the cast to sing.” The two acts weave together a tapestry of contemplative moments, from the flagmaker fearing for her loved ones fighting in the American Revolutionary War, to the lover admitting the power his beloved holds over him, to the kid from the wrong side of the tracks dreaming of basketball stardom.

The revue style of the show is a departure from the typical musical formula. Director Love has intentionally kept costumes and set minimal - the drawcards here are the stories themselves. “Hopefully people will walk away singing the catchy riffs and melodies but also appreciating their way of life,” he muses, “and maybe, just maybe, they have come to their own one moment...”
