Thoroughly Modern Millie at MLOC

Thoroughly Modern Millie at MLOC

MLOC’s Thoroughly Modern Millie rehearsals are buzzing with excitement as the June 13, 2014 opening night at Phoenix Theatre, Elwood (Vic) draws near.

Based on the popular movie, this stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers, with book by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan and new music and lyrics by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan.

Winner of Best New Musical at the 2002 Tony Awards, this high-spirited musical takes place in New York City in 1922, and tells the story of Millie Dillmount, newly arrived in the city in search of a new life for herself.

It is a New York full of intrigue and jazz, at a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever.

The two romantic lead roles of Millie Dillmount and Jimmy Smith are played by Amy Gridley and James Robertson, who coincidentally are both Melbourne-based school teachers.

Amy teaches at Cheltenham East Primary School, and James teaches Drama/Theatre Studies Year Seven to VCE at Beaconhills College.

Their fellow principal performers include Mandie Lee (Dorothy Brown), Ash Cooper (Trevor Graydon III), Trish Carr (Mrs Meers), Carly Daley (Muzzy van Hossmere), Ju-Han Soon (Ching Ho) and Will Kim (Bun Foo).

MLOC’s production is directed by Lyn Laister, with musical direction by Stacey-Louise Camilleri and choreography by Rhylee Nowell.

Director Lyn says, “Millie is a fun-filled show to be enjoyed by all ages.”

Performances: June 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 at 8.00pm, June 15 at 5.00pm and June 21 at 2.00pm.
