2011 Green Room Awards: Nominations Announced

2011 Green Room Awards: Nominations Announced

What on earth went on with this year’s Green Room Awards nominations?

Nominations have been announced for  the 2011 Awards for excellence on the Melbourne stage for the period January 1st through to 31st December 2011...with some bizarre omissions.
Leading the nominations, with 12, is the musical Rock of Ages (Image above. Photographer: Jeff Busby).
For some reason the judges decided not to have any award for Best Musical.
This was in a year that Melbourne premiered a lavish new production of Love Never Dies.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical picked up six  nominations including for Best Director (Simon Phillips) and Design (Gabriela Tylesova).
But in an extraordinary omission Ben Lewis was snubbed in the Best Male Performer category...which only had two nominees. Brent Hill, Rock of Ages  and Reg Livermore, Turns
The recipients will be announced a ceremony to be held on Sunday 18th March 2012 at The Playhouse, Arts Centre Melbourne.
Perhaps then the mysterious selections will be explained. Each year Green Room Awards are awarded to a wide variety of professional performing artists from both behind and in front of the curtain, across theatre, musical theatre, cabaret, opera and dance. Nominations are made by the Association membership and voted on by secret ballot.

Tim Stitz, the newly appointed President of the Association, stated “The Green Room Awards stand for excellence on Melbourne’s stages. Since 1982 they have been at the heart of the Melbourne’s theatre community and we continue to celebrate the diversity, creativity and outstanding range of work on offer in Melbourne. The Green Room Awards are Australia’s premier peer-assessed arts awards”.

Green Room Association members are comprised of industry professionals including directors, playwrights, choreographers, performers and critics who all decide the nominations and awards. The members are organized into panels in each discipline. All professional productions with a minimum number of Melbourne performances are eligible for Awards.

In 2011, Green Room Award Association panels saw more 144 independent theatre productions, 42 professional dance works, 14 musicals, 13 operas, 38 productions by major theatre companies, more than 30 cabaret shows and 56 alternative and hybrid performance works, which encompass contemporary circus, live art, physical theatre, new media, interdisciplinary performance and site-specific events.

Along with the individual awards presented in March 2012, the Green Room Awards Association will present the prestigious 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award to an individual whose work has “significantly enriched Melbourne’s cultural landscape”. Further details of this award will be announced in the coming weeks. The 2011 Technical Achievement Award, given to the “unsung” heroes of the performing arts, those whose work often goes unseen and unrecognised by audiences will be announced at the Awards ceremony.

Nominations for the Green Room Awards are traditionally announced on the third Tuesday of February, proclaimed as Theatre Day by the then Lord Mayor of Melbourne Winsome McCaughey in 1987, making this the 25th anniversary year.
