Short+Sweet Cabaret 2016 Final

Short+Sweet Cabaret 2016 Final

After four weeks of heats at New Theatre, Short+Sweet Cabaret 2016 reaches its climax on Sunday 7 February with its gala final at Slide Lounge in Darlinghurst

Fourteen cabaret, comedy and magic acts, selected by both industry judges and audience votes, will face off at one of Sydney’s few genuine cabaret venues from 7pm.

The acts include a bizarre singing Terminator, a girl with a hilarious one night stand habit, spectacular tap dance, a Dr Who stalker, singing serial seducer (with tips to share!), a stunning chanteuse… and more!

Finalists from the fourth and final week of heats to enter the finals are Kay Armstrong as her comedy alter ego ‘Bike’, Lady Cool (inTales from the Psych Ward) and double act Debbie Neilson and Luke Reeves as Marilyn Monroe and James Bond (on parallel missions to kill each other.

Stage Whispers attended the fourth week of the heats for a diverse program which stretched well beyond the boundaries of traditional cabaret and into Burlesque with a striptease, as well as an act which was something of a surreal look at the nature of cabaret.

The final again promises to cross the boundaries of conventional cabaret, into magic and comedy.

The three week four finalists join Alastaire Tomkins (Songs for Sarah Connor); Julianne Sisinni (Being Betty); Sally Hare’s Tap Girls; Nico in Boys, Boys, Boys; M’sieur P (A Man and His Organ); Rosie Rivette (Mrs Rivette’s Wild Night In); Alexander Chambers (Fangirl); Melody Beck (Unsung: the Many Voices of Rita Hayworth) and Anna Canillas (Dear Diary). Plus comedian Thao Thanh Cao and 14-year-old magic prodigies “Cardistry” (Ash Hodgkinson and Lucas Itrawan) with Double Trouble!

MC for the final is the sassy ‘Cruello De Vil’ (Brendan Hay) and a wealth of awards and prizes will be decided by guest judges including famous casting director Suzie Maizels, legendary musical director Bev Kennedy, international talent agent Gary Jones, producer and magic impresario James Karp and corporate cabaret diva Lesley Hancock.

Festival director James Taylor said the final line-up was a sensational, sexy blend of pure entertainment and dazzling talent with literally something for everyone: “True to the Short+Sweet philosophy of short, fabulous bites, this is a tasting plate to die for!”
