Tony Awards 2023

There is an Australian connection to the Tony Awards this year, with Jodie Comer winning Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her role in the one woman play Prima Facie, written by Australian playwright Suzie Miller.

Prima Facie was not nomimated in the Best Play category itself despite winning the Laurence Oliver award for Best Play in London.

Judges in the 2023 Tony Award have again selected what could be described as a non-commercial musical for the coveted Best Musical award.

In 2022 it was A Strange Loop which won critical acclaim but did not cover its costs and closed within a year.

In 2023 the big winner was Kimblerly Akimbo which picked up five Tony Awards.

The musical is described by the New York Times as ” the profoundly funny and heartbreaking new nerdical that opened at the Booth Theater. Born with a fatal aging disorder akin to progeria, Kimberly Levaco (Victoria Clark) is a 15-year-old girl whose body resembles that of a woman well into her 70s. Knowing she will not live much beyond 16, she wants to experience everything she imagines the world has to offer — road trips, a robot butler, puppy love — while she can. The value of her life cannot be measured by how long it lasts, any more than the show’s can by how long it runs."
