National Institute of Circus Arts. Director: Meredith Kitchen. Production Manager & Lighting Design: Eduard Ingles. Sound Designer: Angelique Ross. NICA, Prahran. 24-27 September and 1-4 October, 2014

In an exciting display second year students from NICA constructed and performed three ensemble pieces exploring their responses to, and their interpretations of, “7”.

This was a satisfying demonstration of the lessons of collaboration, performance focus, physical theatre and a broad range of circus skills. There were moments of danger and humour.

Every performer followed through on their piece of the action and displayed excellent commitment. Shortfalls in performance were slickly covered. They occasionally reached the bliss of making something extremely difficult seem effortless and even fun.

The show was an “experiment that aims to raise awareness around contemporary issues” as well as an opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in a performance setting. There was a nod at sexual politics and gendered violence which unfortunately lacked the intellectual rigor that is required when publicly exploring difficult territory.

Physical equipment was handled so the audience had the surprise of realising something had disappeared while distracted or the movement of equipment was entirely integrated into the show.

Sound and lighting were an exciting addition to the show and provided a very solid backdrop for the performers. The safety elements of the performances were discretely handled except for “I can fly” moments when the safety harness was used for dismounts from on high.

This show augers well for future of circus and performance.
