Alice the Musical

Alice the Musical
Adapted by Vernon Mound from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Eltham Little Theatre. Directors: Gayle Poor & Lois Fleming. Chorographer: Lois Fleming. July 9 – 18.

ELT’s annual children’s production Alice the Musical was an amazing evening, enhanced by the amazing costuming and make up, equal to many professional shows seen around Melbourne.
The company made full use not only of the stage but also the auditorium, where the cast came from the rear and each side, down the centre and onto the stage. A large cast included two Alices. On audience left, just off the stage, the Reverend Charles Dodgson sat with the young Alice and told her the story, which then took place on stage. The young Alice was given a fine interpretation by Chloe Johnson. Alicia Muscat gave the Alice of the story a good portrayal.
As Reverend Charles Dodgson, Chris Fleming’s good projection, with a clear enunciation, added to the standard.
Gretel Donnelly’s dormouse was a highlight - a wonderful performance, full of energy, except when, as the dormouse does, she fell asleep at the drop of a hat. Gretel has a natural stage feel and your correspondent is sure she has an excellent stage future.
Emma Nixon’s Queen was another good performance, while as the Duchess who seemed to have had a little too much to drink, Amanda Middleditch really captured the essence of such a character in a wonderful professional performance.
A large cast, all working smoothly together, were well appreciated by the audience.
ELT’s annual youth show is definitely a must for your diary. Congratulations to Gayle Poor and Lois Fleming for the effort they both put in to make such a success and guaranteeing the future of theatre.
