Bitch, Antigone

Bitch, Antigone
By Steven Dawson. Out Cast Theatre. The Butterfly Club, Melbourne. July 18 – 20, 2019.

The Out Cast Theatre is the first and longest running LGBQT+ friendly company in Australia. Their new show Bitch, Antigone is currently on at the Butterfly Club, ahead of the Edinburgh Fringe 2019.

Three ambitious but woeful actors take the stage and deliver a peculiar rendition of the Classic Greek tragedy Antigone written by Sophocles in the year 441 BC. A story within a story set in Ancient Greece - a rather peculiar production of Antigone is taking place during the annual Dionysian Fringe Festival. With their eyes on the best actor awards, a pecking order is in place and unexpected fears and ridiculous parodies surface on stage.

The actors - Nathan Butler, Wayne Pearn and Scott Middleton - overlay their multitude of roles with fast, farcical and insipid delivery. They create an ad hoc impression resulting in hilarious, precocious performances. Director Steven Dawson has used original dialogue from Antigone and constructed an outrageous   second storyline that is full of expletives, while some homegrown referencing includes the soapie Home and Away. Popular songs are mixed into the mayhem, including Barbra Streisand, adding a colorful diversion.

Artistic Director Steven Dawson, an actor, director and writer of numerous plays and productions, has performed across Australia, Europe and America, with a long list of successful productions to his name.
