Boy Zoned

Boy Zoned
By Ryan Hunt and Heather Jerems. Paper Haus. Fringe World. Directed by Heather Jerems. The Circus Theatre, Fringe Central, Perth Cultural Centre, WA. Feb 5-10, 2019

Boy Zoned is a new juke box musical, making its premiere at FringeWorld. It features Boy Zoned, the hottest boy band cover band in the world, as they undertake their “huge” stadium world tour.

A parody of boy bands of the 90s, it is very funny, but also features amazing harmonies, excellent singing and all of your favourite 90s boy band dance moves.

Wonderful team work from Jack Martin (CJ), Liam Wigney (KJ), Ryan Hunt (GJ) and Sam Maloney (JJ), all of whom look and sound like the real deal, and create distinctive and very likeable characters. Their much maligned back-up singer Gabriella is gloriously played by Georgia McGivern, and it isn’t too much of a spoiler alert to say that she leads the final song - and it is well worth the wait.

There are some gorgeous moments in this show, which is a wonderful “last show of the night” choice for FringeWorld. Fresh, funny and fluid.

While not to everyone’s taste (there were noticeable walk outs on opening night), as it does have some ripe language, this has so much to like and the production values and execution are excellent.

Definitely a must for fans of boy bands, but a solid musical theatre choice and simply good fun.
