Cabaret Consultations

Cabaret Consultations
Fringe World. Directed by Ahmed Kazmi. The Gold Digger, Fringe Central, Perth, WA. Feb 19-24, 2018

Two years ago at Fringe World, I had the pleasure of attending a new medical comedy show. More than just stand-up, it included song and dance and told of (then) local GP Ahmed Kazmi’s experiences as a medical professional. It was absolutely delightful, but rough around the edges, and it was clear that this talented young man was new to performing. Since then the good doctor has performed his show around the world, and his reputation as a performer has soared. This week, Dr Ahmed Kazmi’s Cabaret Consultations had its World Premiere at Fringe World and we are treated to a show that is slick and polished, with a performer that holds and enchants his capacity crowd.

Very funny, very charming and possessed of a gorgeously resonant voice, Dr Ahmed also improvises with the best, taking advantage of discussions with the crowd for some clever asides. There are some wonderful song parodies and some serious numbers, from performers ranging from Parton to Piaf. Musical Theatre fans will love his adaptations of songs from Little Shop of Horrors and Rocky Horror.

There is time for medical advice and this very personable performer shares his experiences working in the shadow of Grenfell Tower in the hours and days following the fire. Full of surprises, the cabaret moves at a rapid pace and though loved by the medical fraternity (loads of medical professionals in the audience), it has very broad appeal.

A show that deserves five star ratings from those who bestow them, opening night received a rousing standing ovation in a city renowned for its reluctance to respond in this way. Sold out in Perth, I suggest that you grab a ticket at your next opportunity. His original, presumably now very polished show, plays at the Adelaide Fringe.
