Koorliny Arts Centre’s production of Catch Me If You Can has been much anticipated, and is certainly living up to the hype. Featuring a stellar cast, this show has outstanding production values, looks great, sounds brilliant and is being very well received.

Performed on a multi-level set, which it will cleverly share with the upcoming production of Les Misérables, it is beautifully dressed and thoughtfully used. Costumes, under the supervision of head of wardrobe Lyn Leeder, are particularly impressive and transport us back to the 1960s.

Based on the true story of notorious con artist Frank Abagnale Jr, whose escapades included pretending to be an American Airways pilot and masquerading as a doctor and later a lawyer before being captured by the FBI, it features Joshua Firman in the leading role. Joshua delivers an outstanding performance, anchoring the show beautifully, with great charm and finesse.

Abagnale's nemesis is Carl Hanratty, played to perfection by Chris Gerrish, in a performance that endears him to the audience. He is nicely supported by several federal agents including Murray Petrone strong as Agent Tod Brenton, Dylan Randall solid as Agent Cod and RP van de Westhuizen, funny and charming as Agent Johnny Dollar.

Lovely work from John Taylor and Catherine Archer as Abagnale's parents, both delivering highly layered characterisations. Matilda Jenkins shines as love interest Brenda Strong (beautifully voiced), with Nat Burbage and Peter Knol making the most of the limited stage time as her parents. Hayley Pelz as Cheryl Ann is also impressive.

This is an ensemble led show and Koorliny’s ensemble cast is simply stunning. Many of the named characters step in and out of ensemble roles and this chorus is one of the best of the season, amateur or professional. 

Kate Leeder’s choreography is stunning and precisely executed, while Kate McIntosh as musical director has produced vocal performances that are second to none. With Katherine Freind leading the team as director, the three Kates are a team that would be difficult to beat.

This show is pacey, clever and performed with precision and energy.

With one of the strongest musicals of the year, it was surprising that the first matinee was only half full. This is a production that will feature heavily come awards time and audiences will be kicking themselves if they miss it. With only one weekend to go I advise to book your tickets immediately.
